7 Reasons Why Teaching the Bible Matters

by | Oct 6, 2015 | CALLING

Why should I bother teaching the Bible? This is a legitimate question I asked the Lord, because I really needed to know. Why should I bother teaching the Bible when there are already so many Bible teachers? Why should I bother writing Bible studies when there are already so many great ones? Here are the short, God-given answers, friends.

  1. God’s Word Lasts Forever
  2. People Need the Truth
  3. Jesus is Lifted Up
  4. The Word Says To
  5. Laborers Are Needed
  6. You Grow Too
  7. You Are Called

I debated what the focus of The Pointed Life would be long before it ever began. I had some really great ideas, I thought. I could write and take pictures of home decorating, fashion, baking, traveling, and creating art. I know a lot of other women who would like those things, too. There is nothing wrong with enjoying, seeing, searching for, dreaming of, practicing those things, nor following others who do. I still do those things. I enjoy them, and I am good at most. But just because I am good at something, doesn’t mean I am called to do it.

God kept directing my eyes off those other things and putting them on His word. I would bring Him more ideas and ask, “What about this, and what about that?” But He would bring my mind and heart back to His word and eternity every time. “What if women get tired of it?” I asked. “They need it,” He answered. “What if they think we are just trying to be like everyone else?” I wondered. “Don’t try to be, and they won’t think it,” He replied.

I still questioned, why bother when there are so many others doing it? Not that there aren’t a myriad of others doing the afore mentioned as well, I just needed to hear why from God. There may be more reasons, but these are the reasons that stayed and sustain me. These are the reasons that set my face like flint and cause me not to turn to the right or the left. The Pointed Life is here to help women find their way through God’s word. Here are my God-given reasons why.

GOD’S WORD LASTS FOREVER

Forever is a big deal. This is more than the BFF kind of forever. His word is the one thing that the Lord said endures forever. The word set the world and our life in motion, and continues to hold it all together. It is the invisible power that created the material world, and it is beyond our human comprehension. His word will be in heaven with us forever. It is alive. Woah! I am in awe just thinking of the wonder of it all. As if that alone isn’t a good enough reason, God gave me more. (1 Peter 1:20-25, Hebrews 1:3; 4:12)

PEOPLE NEED THE TRUTH

There are a lot of folks who know the Bible, but there is another whole level of knowing the truth. Even atheists and the demons know the Bible. Knowing the truth is more powerful than knowing the Bible. When the lies come and the enemy attacks, knowing the truth arms us. We are set free by truth. Truth of God is infallible and irrefutable. It is the Spirit that releases the power of the truth and brings the revelation. The Spirit leads us into all truth. What that means for us is something entirely different than having head knowledge of scripture. It means we have to be joined to the Spirit, walking in the Spirit, seeking and studying and hearing by the Spirt, so the word that comes forth from us bears His anointing. So the word we bring is from God to His daughters. “They don’t need more of you,” God said, “they need more of Me and My anointing.” It is His anointing that breaks the yoke, and Father God wants His daughters free. (John 8:32; 16:3, James 2:19, 2 Timothy 3:16)

JESUS IS LIFTED UP

Jesus is the word. The word became flesh and dwelt among us. The whole purpose of our life, and why we are on this planet after we are saved is so others can also be saved. We bring the message. When we lift up the word, give it priority in our life, ministry, family and business, we are lifting up Jesus. The Father will do the drawing. The Holy Spirit will do the wooing. The kindness of God will grant repentance. That’s not our job. Our job is to bear light. We are not in the spot light. We are the spotlight pointing ourselves toward God and His word so others can see Him. (John 1:14; 12:32, Romans 2:4; 10:14)

THE WORD SAYS TO

This may be an obvious reason, but when I saw this in scripture it sealed the deal for me. Which means, even though the devil is relentless at shooting arrows of doubt when it comes to Bible teaching, what Paul said in 2 Peter 1:12-13 is what helps me raise the shield of faith every time. I love how the message puts it so plain.

Because the stakes are so high, even though you’re up-to-date on all this truth and practice it inside and out, I’m not going to let up for a minute in calling you to attention before it. This is the post to which I’ve been assigned—keeping you alert with frequent reminders—and I’m sticking to it as long as I live.

LABORERS ARE NEEDED

Seriously, I have dealt with insecurities of being a relatively “unknown” Bible teacher, mostly teaching my children up until now, especially when the really “known” Bible teachers do such an amazing job and seem larger than life. That is probably the insecurity that made me question most, “Why bother?” Well, I know it is. To deal with this  — because we can’t keep having this kind of mindset and be effective Kingdom workers, you know — the Lord gave me a picture.

I was a little fishing boat amass lots of other big ships. The big ships were bringing in some large catches, nets overflowing with fish. They were in open waters, but could not navigate that easily or quickly just anywhere. But I could. I could go between them and past them and into other smaller waterways where there were lots of fish but no big ships. I could come up close to the fish, touch them, and be acquainted with them. Big ships could do a lot, but so could my small boat.

I could go on, but do you get the picture? The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. There are more people than we can imagine that need the truth God’s word, and there are not enough workers to reach them. You are needed. And while you are a small boat, you can reach individuals in ways and places those big ships are not able to. (Matthew 9:27)

YOU GROW TOO

In order to teach God’s word and write Bible studies, I actually have to do the work myself. But even if not a single human being hears or reads any of what I teach, the time spent studying and seeking God is never time wasted. The same goes for you. We will  grow as a result. God does the work in us first before we can bring it to the people. He pours into us so we can pour out, and it is never done in vain. (Matthew 13:8, 1 Thessalonians 2:13)

YOU ARE CALLED

I want you to know, we are all called to share the message of the Gospel. How we share it looks different for us all. It’s the same truth wrapped in different packages. Some of you are called as teachers, and have doubted your call. You have fire shut up in your bones and sometimes it feels as if you will explode. But you’re not sure what to do with it, or you’ve been fearful of letting it out. I’ve given you my reasons, and you can grab them for yourself. What I would say to you, and what I believe God would say is, go for it! Just. Start. You can and should do this. Don’t ever stop teaching the Bible. (Jeremiah 20:9, 2 Corinthians 5:20)

WHAT REASONS KEEP YOU DOING WHAT YOU ARE CALLED TO?
